The other day I had a really good game on Crossfire and I kicked everyone's ass. One of the regulars asked me to teach them how to be a better player. I do not consider myself a "great player" but from time to time I can hold my own. So I thought I would a few tips.... Everyone else can feel free to add in too.
Most of these tips will carry over into other first person shooter games as well. I should add in I am former US Marine, and was a combat instructor, and some of these tips are real life.
- I firmly believe in UAV blockers and dead silence. You never ever want anyone to know where you are.
- Shoot and scoot. Never stay in a position once you've shot from it. Once you've shot from that position that position is compromised.
- In many respects this game is like dating... It's all about the odds. if you sit in one place and wait until people come to you, you must just be waiting a long time. (Likewise if you sit at the corner of the bar and never talk to anyone you'll never meet any chicks.) Go and find people to kill.
- Always head towards the gunfire. Always.
- Be a comeback killer. This means if someone kills you from a certain position, you now know where they are and how best to kill them. When you spawn, chances are you will spawn close to them. Go back and get them.
- Pay attention to who is playing, their playing style, and what weapons they are using. Track them. If you know someone is using the Barrett sniper rifle it has a very distinctive sound and you can pretty much tell where they are firing from. Same thing with big machine guns, shot guns, and even silenced weapons. If you know Cujo (for example) is using a silenced P90 and you hear he just killed someone near you and you know he likes to come up the ladder and not the stairs, well, you know where he is coming from.
- Pick your weapons carefully. I have two weapons and I switch depending on the map. For close up maps where the fighting is mostly indoors like Broadcast, I use the P90. Let's face it, the P90 is freaking awesome. For maps like Farm or Crossfire, I use the M4 with the grip. It's deadly and has great aim. I also have a sniper class and then a "ghost" class with a silenced MP4 in the event I feel like goofing off.
- Dodge bullets. I swear to god it's one of the first things they teach you in Marine Corps boot camp. When you run, dodge.
- Don't be afraid to leave a bad situation. If someone is shooting at you and you do not know where they are, your best bet is to walk away and look for someone else to kill.
- Pay attention. If you know someone is in a room on the second floor and you run in there but they are gone.... Where did they go? Did you hear them jump out of the room? Does that mean they are coming up behind you?
- Emergency Action Drills... I learned this from a Vietnam Vet really. Train for certain events so when they happen, you instantly know what to do. It should become automatic, and might even vary from map to map. If you know someone is sniping from that one room on Crossfire with the ladder, you instantly know you have X amount of options. You can go up the ladder but it might have a clay, and of course you can toss a nade up into one of the corners.
- Listen for claymores. If you are about to walk up the stairs and you hear a claymore being placed, play it smart and go slow and look for it. You already know it's there.
- Avoid better players. If you know a really good player is trying to dominate a certain area of the map, avoid getting into a battle where you keep trying to best that player (and usually fail). The object is to kill, not be killed, and if you know someone has the upper hand you are best off to just stay away. Never get into a situation where you keep going back to confront a player because "this time" you are "sure" you can beat them.
Knifing..... It's no secret I am big on knifing people. My secret to knifing is very simple....
1) I changed my default knife button to the space bar on my keyboard. It's the biggest button on the keyboard and the easiest to reach. Any time I am in panic mode or in doubt, I bang on that space bar.
2) Be running at speed when you knife. Always helps.

But wait, there is more!
- Be sneaky. If you run around an obstacle someone shooting at you will expect you to come out on the other side. If you stop and then turn around.... Chances are you will surprise them.
- Confuse your opponent with a smoke grenade. Just toss it into their room. They know something is coming, but don't know what. Give it a bit, let them panic, then let them think they are safe and then come running in.
- Blind nades always work. If you know of a place where people camp just toss it in. Can't hurt.

I have done this for some time now... That is a bind set up and I hit it every time I move into position to knife someone.
It has an added effect because once it's happened to you a few times and you see me say "Look behind you".... Everyone stops and looks behind them expecting to be attacked.
