Today while playing in Broadcast around 1730 MST a guy came in and his name was ShylockTheJew.  I have to ask, does this trip rule #1 of FH servers of "No Racism of any kind"?  I have a Jewish mother and I am therefore 1/2 Jewish, and although its not really "upsetting" to me, I  have pretty thick skin, but I still dont think its cool.  I dont mean to sound crass, but I am pretty sure that if my name was AbeTheNegro or AbeTheArab, it wouldn't fly at all.  And on top of it all he was cursing out the other players (you can check the game logs).  I'm not sure what was worse, the guys' name, or no one asking him to change it??  I am curious what the FH thinking toward this is.  Thanks for the read.

The name alone wouldn't seem to be terrible from the surface, more or less a reference to a Shakespeare character.

However combine that with the chat logs, and the idea that the name is just a reference loses ground. I've given him a temp ban, thanks Abe!

No, its not a race, but most secular American Jews think of their Jewishness as a matter of culture or ethnicity.  And lets be real, in the gamer community, most gamers that use the term JEW either in their name or tag are "probably" not coming from a good place when they use it. Its a pretty safe bet.

Abe we do take a serious view to names on the server and where they cause offence we ask people to change their name and if they don't we take action.

I came onto the server when Shylock was on, in part because of the conversation.  It was your comments that made me come on...... you said "lol says a guy with Jew in his name...." 

I looked up the name on google and it was a character from the Merchant of Venice.  As the conversation didn't go any further I left it.  I was quite surprised in light of the comment you made on the server that you came here to post about it.

It was my way of showing my displeasure to him, fully knowing that flaming on a gamer that is running his mouth and cussing out other players is useless.  Posting in here about it is merely inquiring on how FH as a clan views this; a solicitation of opinions is all, and Pear answered my question.  Like I said, most gamers, especially those cussing out others while in-game, probably dont use that term coming from a good place, whether its from a book or not.

I'd just like to weigh in with the opinion that having just a race/religion in your game name isn't a bad thing. I could play as TheAsian and no one would really care, but throw in something derogatory and that's when you get racism. This is vastly different from having a racial slur as a name, such as the n-word. Different races exist in this world and it would be foolish to deny the differences between cultures. Just don't bring in the stereotypes and racism and we'll all live happily together.  In this case, Shylock was swearing at other people, which is unacceptable regardless of his name (although it did exacerbate things).

Thanks Spankeem, like I said none of it I found super offensive, I was just more curious on what you guys thought of him and his act overall, and how (if at all) it interacted with one of your Cardinal Rules.  I have been part of the online PC FPS gaming community since the MOHAA days, and I know how some guys get loose without thinking first.  I think you guys do a great job, and I really like playing in your server and I think you guys have a great group going.  See you out on the battlefield, if you need to find me I'll be the corpse that Jock is stepping over.....

chet manley came across this situation once with a player that called himself "JewPopper". I wanted to make sure with this guy so chet manley went on and on about how Mel Brooks was chet manley's favorite Jew. chet manley loves going Israel....so and so forth. That brought out the racism in JewPopper and was able to easily ban him after that.

If to be a Jew is synonymous with being an Israelite, or one who is born of the bloodline of Jacob, the Son of Abraham who was later renamed Israel, or Judea - the Land of the Jews (according to Biblical text). Then to be a Jew, in the purest terms means that it is a bloodline first and POSSIBLY a religion second. However, some would argue, that while "Jews" do not posses any distinctive differences in their genetic make-up that would clearly classify them as a race, their distinct blood line would and could, and should classify them as a race.

Harry Ostrer, a medical geneticist and professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, claims that Jews are different, and the differences are not just skin deep.

Now to my opinion on this, for this has bothered me for quite some time.

So, to be a Jew is different than being Jewish. Jew refers to a bloodline of people (at minimum and possibly a race at max) and Jewish, as Khaleesi stated, is a term used for religious appointment or designation, by en-large. Many who are Jew are not Jewish (practicing Judaism). Some are Christian, some are Atheist, Agnostic, etc.. There is no greater horrible distinction given to this then what Hitler did to the Jews. Make no mistake, when Hitler set out to eradicate the Jew, he was not attempting to wipe out the "religion", he was after the bloodline, or "race" if you will.

Now, it is my opinion, to mock anyone in an FH server on the biases of race, religion, sexual preference - be it homosexual bashing, Jew hating or mocking, black white or Asian race banter... 'fill in the blank' ... should not be tolerated.

If a dude comes into the server with the name Jew in his name, you can put money on the fact he's got ill intentions and should be asked to change it, or leave with respect to our guests such as Abe Froman, who is a Jew and finds it offensive (slight or otherwise). I would much rather have Abe as a frequent guest on the server, who is kind and thoughtful and obeys our rules, then allow a dude to come in with "Jew" in his name, and he stays and Abe leaves.
